Many surveys are seasonally constrained which could
delay your project for up to a year. It is very important
to be aware of seasonality and plan your surveys as
soon as a potential project is considered. Significant
windows will be posted on this front page for easy reference.
June-August
Bats: Bats are in their breeding roosts in peak
numbers and its the prime time to look for these
most important roosts. If you are thinking of a bat
survey book one in for this period to get the most robust
report: be quick as bat workers get booked up!
Nesting birds: bird nesting activity is much
reduced compared to earlier in the year. However, many
late starters will still have occupied nests and many
species will have second broods. You should still
commission a nesting survey if buildings are being demolished
or vegetation is being cleared during this period.
Reptiles: The next and last window for robust
reptile surveys is September, but you need to have your
refuges down and bedded before the beginning of August.
Next window after September is April 2010.
Detailed vegetation surveys:
This is the peak period for surveying vegetation in
detail. Next window for detailed vegetation surveys
is May to August 2010.
